new tonight on 9news and washington guardian probe has uncovered $6 billion in what could be tax dollars gone to waste. >> investigative reporter says some of it is already six-feet under, literally. >> reporter: until now, official estimates on waste within the stimulus program had

been put on by about $11 million. but that's nothing compared to the questionable spending we'd found. to get it you would have to multiply that number by about 600 times. just to get on the same spread sheet buried in department after department and underground. it's possible that you might find some of the people under these historic headstones, that they got some of the dollars after they were buried. our probe found a report of v.a. checks being paid out using social security numbers of dead americans. the unknown dead monument has a definitive link to the spending too. we are tracking the money sent to maintain this century-old maryland monument and others across the country paid out as a part of the 2009 economic stimulus package. but tonight the veterans administration's own internal watchdog says that the agency cannot determine whether or not they spend the money effectively at the cemetery or other projects because they don't have an effective way to prioritize projects or measure if they really help stimulate

the economy. wusa and the washington guardian added up all the internal investigations at the department of energy, department of education, and 27 other federal agencies that spend stimulus money, finding more than .8 million had been misspent, lost to fraud, or questionable in other ways. our reviews on the program and spending on the american recovery reinvestment act indicates the numbers are likely to grow. investigators in the government agency that spent the money continue their audits and pursuing more than 1,900 open criminal investigations. for more specific examples like funds intended to aid the poor folks in rural areas, instead being paid for homes with swimming pools. check out our findings at wusa9.com. for 9 wants to know with the washington guardians. >> thank you, russ. the white house did not respond to requests for a comment, anita? you can rip out that dictionary page that has the word landslide in it because it

public backlash over earlier plans to go ahead and have it. new yorkers complained that the marathon would take police and other resources away from the areas hard hit by the storm five days ago. mayor michael bloom issued a statement saying, "we cannot -- bloomberg issued a statement saying, "we cannot allow this to distract attention away from the critically important work that is being done to recover from the storm and get our city back on track." many of those affected by the storm agree. >> life changes, you know. sometimes you've got to cancel things. i mean there was no halloween. >> folks helping with the race have shifted their focus, now helping out-of-town runners that don't need the hotel rooms anymore to donate those rooms to families displaced by the storm. sandy's force is very visible on staten island where the marathon was suppose to start. both are piled on top of each other. houses are torn from their foundations, and they pushed them hundreds of feet away into the march. homes have been boarded up.

keely thompson and his wife bianca are looking at federal charges after misusing $1.5 million of grant money that had been intended for underprivileged kids in the district. that money was suppose to help funds keely's boxing centers, but instead investigators say he and his wife spent the cash on lavished vacations, gambling trips, cars, furnitures, even payouts to themselves. they were indicted today on the scheme and the wire fraud charges, but they have yet to be arraigned. and new tonight at 11:00, we've got the sketch of a man wanted for sexual assault. on october the 21st, a woman was on the trail in bethesda when she was attacked. the suspect is about six feet tall and has short brown hair. recognize that guy? call the cops. and we have also learned that another woman was groped. this time in the springfield area. it happened on thursday afternoon in the 7200 block of commerce street. this is the 8th groping reported there in the last couple of months. the woman says she screamed when the pervert grabbed her and then he took off running.
